Incursions and excursions for Stage 4 students.

Stage 4 Science-Living Systems

Location: Nightcap National Park (Minyon)

This program, based in Nightcap National Park – introduces the features of the falls; delves into Minyon Food Chains, Food Webs, Energy Pyramids and Trophic Levels; Students collect data (abiotic and macroinvertebrate study) and learn about the species of the forest – endangered, native, endemic, introduced and feral.

Stage 4 Geography - Landscapes and landforms

Location: Nightcap National Park (Minyon)

Students take part in an Landscapes and Landforms day. Become familiar with basic fieldwork equipment such as hygrometers, light meters, anemometers and compasses. Participate in a bush walk through the environment and use the equipment to measure abiotic factors and identify landforms. They identify scats and tracks and walk to the bottom of the falls . Water testing at the falls is optional.

Stage 4 Geography - Liveability of places

Location: Flat Rock, Ballina

Students spend the day investigating Ballina Flatrock and surrounds. Participate in mapping, field sketching, plant identification and weather chart reading.  Record and analyse the abiotic factors of the site with basic geographer's tools equipment and record data collected along a transect. Investigate the livability aspects of the area and respond thoughtfully to the changes to the area that have happened since the non-Indigenous peoples settled in the area.

Stage 4 Geography - Water in the World

Location: Rocky Creek Dam

Students spend the day investigating our water Catchment at Rocky Creek Dam - it's past, present and future. Participate in a walk that highlights the endemic flora and fauna and the Bundjalung uses of the plants- medicinal, nutritional, shelter materials etc. Use different types of maps to connect with the area and learn the techniques of field sketching. Take part in Water Quality testing and investigation of abiotic factors both in and out of the rainforest.

This can also be delivered at Emigrant Creek, Killen Falls.

Stage 4-6: Science and Geography - Environmental Workshop

Location: Incursion (your school)

DEEC staff run an Environmental Workshop at your school with a class- Energy Workshop - Biodiversity, Water, Energy and Waste audits - create a School Environmental Management Plan with students or design a sustainable House .

Collaborate with us

Collaborate with Dorroughby Environmental Education Centre's educators to design a field study with investigation activities that align with NSW curriculum outcomes and suits your students' specific needs.

Wetlands: McLeays Wetlands, Tuckean Reserve

Farm Study: Djaning Permaculture Farm, Myocum Macadamia Farm.
