Stage 6 programs

Incursions and excursions for Stage 6 students.

Stage 6 - Field Study - McLeays Wetland and Tuckean Reserve

Biology, Earth and Environment, Investigating Science

Location: McLeays Wetland and Tuckean Reserve.

Students meet local experts and investigate local wetlands of the Richmond River catchment - the history of area; consequences of wetland drainage - acid sulfate soils- habitat dwellers (flora and fauna) - future management plans for the area.  Students use a range of geographers tools to collect and analyse data.

Syllabus outcomes align with current NSW Science curriculum

Stage 6  Field Study - Local Ecosystems

Biology, Earth and Environmental Science, Investigating Science

Location: Nightcap National Park, Brunswick Nature Reserve, Woody Head, Ballina Flatrock.

Conduct a scientific exploration of a local environment (Rainforest, Wetlands or Coast, including Rock Platforms) and discuss human impacts. Use transects and quadrats to study the distribution and abundance of plants and animals in an environment. Learn about plant and animal adaptations and how to measure the abiotic factors. Coastal studies can include human impact study with microplastic survey along transects. Link investigations to a depth study. Choices of biomes include rainforests, coasts and wetlands.

Canoes can be incorporated into the days, up to 16 students, 1 teacher  ($20 cost per student if from public school)

Syllabus outcomes align with current NSW Science curriculum

Stage 6 - Field Study by water - Kayaking

Science/Geography

Small groups of 16 students paddle kayaks and investigate estuarine ecosystems - land use over time and the impact of humans on the area.  Water testing, mapping and field sketching included.

Sites: Evans River and Brunswick River.

Canoes - up to 16 students, 1 teacher  ($20 cost per student if from public school)

Syllabus outcomes align with current NSW Science and Geography curriculum

Kayaks on riverbanks
Students with local farmer

Stage 6 - Farm Study

Geography

Location: The Channon; Myocum

Djaning Permaculture Farm - Students visit a local permaculture farm where sustainability isn't just practised, it's lived. Students get a hands on experience of many of permaculture methodologies.

Myocum Macadamia Farm - Students observe regenerative agricultural practices in action.

Syllabus outcomes align with current NSW Geography curriculum

Stage 6 - Field Study

Science/Geography

Students conduct an in depth investigation of either Brunswick Heads or Evans Head.

Brunswick Heads - Activities include investigating the history, geology and Indigenous past of the areas and surrounds - mangrove discussion - abiotic and plant id transects - beach dune quadrats and field sketching. Microplastic transect highlight the plastic problem we have in our oceans.

Evans River - investigating the history, geology and Indigenous past of the area and surrounds - water quality testing.

Kayaking can be included in this excursion.

Stage 6 - Field Study - Boggy Creek Walk

Biology, Earth and Environment, Investigating Science

Location: Top of Minyon, Nightcap National Park, Boggy Creek Walk.

Students investigate local terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, using a range of geographers tools (abiotic investigation, water quality testing, stream watch, plant identification along a transect) to collect and analyse data.

Syllabus outcomes align with current NSW Science and Geography curriculum

Stage 4-6: Science and Geography - Environmental Workshop

Location: Incursion (your school)

DEEC staff run an Environmental Workshop at your school with a class- Energy Workshop - Biodiversity, Water, Energy and Waste audits - create a School Environmental Management Plan with students or design a sustainable House .
